What is Crude Oil?
The Crude Oil (Crude Oil) is a complex mixture of unrefined hydrocarbons extracted from underground reservoirs. It is the essential raw material for producing fuels (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel), industrial fuel oils, and petrochemical products.
The value of a crude oil depends on its density (expressed in API gravity) and sulfur content: so-called "Light Sweet" crudes are most sought after by refineries as they more easily yield high-value light distillates.
Comparative Specifications of Benchmark Crudes
Major Producing Countries & Benchmarks
The international crude oil market is structured around major production basins and key price benchmarks:
-
United States (Permian / US Gulf Coast): World's leading producer of light crude, heavily exported via Texas and Louisiana terminals (WTI benchmark).
-
Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq, Kuwait): Core OPEC production hub, supplying Asian and European markets with medium and heavy crudes (Arab Light, Murban).
-
Atlantic Basin & North Sea: UK and Norwegian oil fields forming the global BFOET benchmark (Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, Troll).
-
West Africa (Nigeria, Angola): Producers of light sweet crudes (Bonny Light, Girassol) highly favored by complex refineries.
Supertanker Shipping, Inspection & Pricing
Crude oil trading requires deployment of major maritime infrastructure and differential price adjustments:
Contracts & Pricing
Prices structured with a premium or discount (differential) against benchmark quotes ICE Brent, NYMEX WTI, or Platts Dubai.
Transport & Tankers
Shipping via large capacity crude oil tankers: VLCC (2 million barrels), Suezmax (1 million), or Aframax (700,000 barrels).
Inspection & Incoterms
Independent volume and quality inspections (SGS, Intertek) at loading ports. Contracts negotiated under Incoterms FOB, CIF, or DES.
