Definition & Standard

What is Sunflower Oil?

The Sunflower Oil is one of the most consumed vegetable oils in the world. Extracted from sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus), it is highly valued in the food industry for its neutral taste, cooking stability, and richness in vitamin E and essential fatty acids.

The market mainly distinguishes between standard sunflower oil (known as linoleic) and high oleic sunflower oil (rich in Omega-9 oleic acid), appreciated for its high resistance to high frying temperatures.

Origins & Export Hubs

International production and brokerage of sunflower oil focus their flows around major crushing and export hubs:

  • Black Sea Basin (Ukraine & Russia): Key region providing over 60% of global bulk crude oil exports.
  • European Union (Romania, Bulgaria, France): Major player for the internal European market and specialized exports in high oleic oil.
  • Argentina: Strategic Southern Hemisphere exporter, providing supply relief during the European off-season.
  • Turkey: Major hub for importing crude oil and re-exporting packaged refined oil.
Procedures & Logistics

Shipping, FOSFA Standards & Bulk Transport

Sunflower oil purchase/sale contracts rely on strict transport rules to prevent contamination of edible liquids:

FOSFA Standard Contracts

Transactions mainly framed by forms FOSFA 53 / FOSFA 54 governing international trade in bulk vegetable oils and fats.

Bulk Transport Solutions

Shipping by Flexitanks (24,000L), ISO tanks, or specialized chemical tankers with stainless steel tanks / food-grade certified coating.

Quality Control & Incoterms

Inspection by an accredited laboratory (SGS / Bureau Veritas) at loading. Commonly negotiated under FOB, CIF, CFR or DDP.
